AUSTIN, Texas – At just 21 years old, Austin-area drag performer Targét already has a strong sense of self.

What You Need To Know

  • Started doing shows online because of pandemic

  • Says it’s a different experience than in-person shows

  • Unclear how long she’ll continue doing shows online

When people first see her, they likely notice the intricate makeup designs elevating her cheekbones, broadening her eyes, and narrowing her nose. They may be drawn to her bejeweled hair and ornate gowns. Just being in her presence is like sitting in the audience of one of her shows.

“I really gravitate towards weird things that make people uncomfortable, so that explains a lot of my fashion and my makeup. I would say Targét is just a slap in the face at the end of the day - a crazy, weird character,” she said.

Pulling inspiration from the cooky and weird, Targét's talent doesn't stop at the stroke of a makeup brush— she's a performer through and through.

Targét’s persona was first imagined online several years ago, but it took time before she felt comfortable taking her talents on stage. A year and a half later, audiences in the capital city have been able to see the full scope of her range in-person.

“I can do anything. It can be a beautiful ballet moment to me, screeching Avril Lavigne and tearing off my wig— just depends on the day,” she said.

The current COVID-19 pandemic has forced many to rethink the ways they showcase their talent given how many venues are either closed or operating under strict new guidelines.

For Targét, this means leveraging the power of social media and bringing audiences directly into her home.

“Audiences are wild whenever I get on stage. I’m always feeding off their energy and whenever I’m performing at home I’m like—was it good? Did we get it? Did we get the shot?” she said.

There's no immediate feedback: no applause, no fans throwing dollar bills. Still, it's the new reality for many artists.

“I feel like I’m so lucky because that’s kinda what I started off doing. Taking videos, taking photos— that’s like an everyday thing for Targét,” she said.

It's unclear how long these type of shows might go on, but Targét will continue to perform online until she can greet fans again in-person. You can learn more about her shows by following her on Facebook and Instagram.
