AUSTIN, Texas -- By now, you might have established an at-home workout routine, but a lot of people are still eager to get back into group fitness. While fitness studios in Texas can reopen at a limited capacity on May 18, some are still taking their time – to make sure they do it right.

What You Need To Know

  • Gyms allowed to reopen in Texas on May 18

  • TruFusion in South Austin has decided to wait and reevaluate in a month

  • Fitness studio sent out survey for customer feedback

  • 66% of people are still not comfortable returning

TruFusion in South Austin is among the studios that are being cautious when it comes to how and when they reopen their doors to students.

“Obviously, we want to be open but it’s also safety for members and employees to make sure we make the right decision,” said franchise owner Jeremy Davis.

TruFusion sent out a survey to its members asking them when they’d feel comfortable heading back to class. They also asked about class size. Some said they’re ready to get back to group fitness immediately.

But most of those surveyed said they’d like to wait a month or two.

“It was about 66 percent are still not comfortable enough and you know, I don’t blame them. There’s a lot of misinformation, a lot of conflicted reports, and being cautious is the best thing to do in anything like this,” said Davis.

For now, they’re figuring out how to best balance their business needs against the reality of reopening with people in the same space.

“The one good thing about it is that we have a lot of space, so as we start to try to do a social distanced-type yoga class and things like that. We’ll be able to accommodate people with enough space to feel comfortable and safe,” said Davis.

Davis said they’re also working with an HVAC team to ensure sufficient air sanitization and that when they do reopen, their team will clean studios and equipment more often. They’ll also depend on their members to do their part in cleaning up after themselves.

The plan at this point is to wait and reassess how other gyms that chose to reopen on May 18 fare. They’ll reassess their options on June 18.

“We hope that we get good data back over those first four weeks and everybody feels confident to come back in because I know how important this is to people’s lives,” said Davis.
