AUSTIN, Texas — Some Texas movie theaters are staying closed for safety reasons, despite Governor Abbott announcing they could open at limited capacity.
- Round Rock location is open
- Austin location reopens May 4
In the meantime, people are finding other ways to watch their favorite flicks.
Drive-in movie theaters are no longer a thing of the past. Since COVID-19 shut down a lot of indoor theaters, people antsy to get out of the house are heading to the Blue Starlite Mini Urban Drive-in in Round Rock. Call it social distancing under the big screen.
"Everybody has to be in their car whenever the movie is going on," employee Brendan Feeney said, "usually we would have people walking up to the stand to have conversations with people. We can’t really do that anymore."
Feeney says that’s what he misses most. While he packs up popcorn for hungry customers, the concession stand itself is off limits to keep people safe. Customers can order snacks with their ticket online. Then Brendan gives them their food when they arrive.
"Just because things are a little different doesn’t mean you can’t have snacks at the movies, " Feeney said.
Feeney started working here just before everything changed. His smile is now hidden by a mask, but his love for the customer is on full display.
"I’ll see a bunch of people on dates and stuff. Sometimes I’ll give them two large candies. Make ita special night for them. Make ‘em happy, ya know," Feeney said.
Feeney says it takes a team to make it all work long before the sun goes down and the movie begins.
Blue Starlite Drive-in in Austin had to close because of the pandemic, but it reopens today May 4, following the Governor’s order. For details go to bluestarlitedrivein.com.
