AUSTIN, Texas — For a long time, it’s been obvious Greg Brown III is a special basketball player. He had his pick of colleges to play at, and on Friday the Vandegrift five-star recruit finally made his decision.
Brown had to choose between five major college programs: Texas, Michigan, Auburn, Memphis and Kentucky. In the end, Brown decided to stay home and commit to Texas.
“It was a very hard decision. My family and friends helped me through it a lot,” Brown said during his announcement on Instagram. “Leaving a legacy at UT like my dad did, my uncle did and my mom did.”
He was also being pursued by the NBA G-League and reportedly had an offer to join their elite team for over $300,000, but the Longhorns are the ones that have been after him the longest.
“Coach Smart was like the first coach to offer me in the 8th or 7th grade and just built a family type relationship since then,” Brown said.
It is a huge recruiting win for Shaka Smart.
“We're very excited about Greg joining our program," Smart said. "We've truly enjoyed building relationships with him and his family over the past four years. His growth as a person and player has been fun to watch. Now as a Longhorn, that growth will continue. We're looking forward to Greg's positive impact on his new teammates and team. In addition, we're excited about helping Greg become his very best at Texas. The future is bright!"
Brown is the only recruit that Texas has in this 2020 class. He will join a roster at Texas that currently has everyone coming back from last year’s team.
