SAN MARCOS -- A man fatally shot a San Marcos police officer and wounded two others Saturday evening at Twin Lake Villas Apartments.
Police reported that the suspect died from an apparent self-inflicted gunshot wound.
San Marcos police were responding to 911 call to for an assault/domestic disturbance around 6:05 p.m. On their arrival, the suspect ambushed the officers with a rifle.
“We are heartbroken to make this announcement,” said Interim Police Chief Bob Klett. “We ask for your support for our fellow officers and their families as we try to cope with yet another tragic event in our San Marcos Police family.”
The two injured officers, Officer Franco Stewart and Officer Justin Mueller, were transported to Ascension Seton Hays in Kyle where they have undergone surgery and were said to be in critical but stable condition. Both officers have served with the department for less than a year.
Officer Justin Putnam was identified as the one who was fatally shot.
Putnam was 31 years old and served as an officer for the San Marcos Police Department for 5 and half years. He graduated magna cumme laude from Texas State University and leaves behind a fiance and family with public safety backgrounds.
“We lost a fine young man, a faithful officer and friend last night.” Klett said emotionally during the press conference. “We've had a lot of tragedy recently, and we appreciate those prayers from the community and thank you for being here today.”
The shooter was preliminarily identified as Alfredo Perez Delacruz. He is believed to have a criminal record and may have gone under different names during the time.
This is the second line of duty death for the San Marcos Police Department since Officer Kenneth Copeland was shot and killed while serving a warrant on December 4, 2017.
