AUSTIN, Texas -- When the people who put on the Texas Film Awards say the show must go on, they really mean it.

Amid a rash of event cancellations across many industries, the Austin Film Society came together Thursday to keep its signature event going for the 20th straight year.

However, there were some changes due to health concerns. No interviews were held on the red carpet, and some of the honorees like Kaitlyn Dever and Michael Murphy accepted with videotaped speeches instead appearing in person.

Longtime actor Shelly Duvall and singer-songwriter Erykah Badu were among the native Texan talent honored at the event. Some of the attendees included Texas filmmakers who planned to premiere work at South By Southwest.

The organizers said everyone's just trying to make the best of a difficult situation.

"I would not recommend producing an awards show during a global crisis, but here we are and it has been a crazy week with lots of changes as it should be. There are a lot more important things right now than getting dressed up, but I'm glad that we were able to continue, and it's critical to the film community to have these funds. So were just going to have a fundraiser and celebrate the community," said the Austin Film Society's Holly Herrick.

Proceeds from the Texas Film Award benefit the Texas Filmmakers Production Fund.
