AUSTIN, Texas -- The issue of impeaching the president has been playing out in the race for U.S. Senate in Texas.
Incumbent Republican John Cornyn has said the allegations against the president don't rise to the level of impeachment. But the top candidates in the crowded field of Democrats who want the chance to challenge him in 2020 are drawing sharp contrasts.
One of them is Chris Bell. The former Houston congressman and gubernatorial nominee says he's been supporting impeachment even before Speaker Nancy Pelosi called for it.
“I was very upset with what we heard out of the Mueller investigation,” Bell said. “I thought that raised a lot of questions about the conduct coming out of the White and certainly when we learned about Ukraine, I thought it was completely justified to have the inquiry.”
On beating Cornyn, Bell says his experience gives him an edge against the other candidates in the Democratic primary.
“I’m the only one on the Democratic side who’s served in Congress before and who’s run statewide before,” he said.
