AUSTIN, Texas -- Years of hard work and millions of dollars in donations all paid off on Monday when a new apartment complex to house the homeless celebrated the end of construction.

- Building is 40,000 square feet
Integral Care celebrated the opening with a ribbon-cutting ceremony at the Terrace at Oak Springs in East Austin. The 40,000 square foot building will house 25 homeless veterans and 25 others experiencing homelessness. It is all in an effort to give those living on the streets the support they need by starting with a safe place to live.
"When individuals don't have a safe and stable place to call home they cannot address their physical health and their mental health. Housing is the foundation once you have housing individuals will have the ability to engage in services that can help them thrive and reach their full potential,” said Darilynn Cardona-Beiler with Integral health.
Hugh Miles has been homeless on and off for years and said having a place to stay brings hope.
“Home means to me like never struggling or worrying about where you lay your head. Home means to me like you start taking care of responsibilities," said Miles.
In addition to having fully-furnished units, residents will receive mental health and substance abuse treatment. Rent is based on a person’s income and residents sign a one-year lease with an annual option to renew.
