ROUND ROCK, Texas -- For those recovering from injuries or needing specialized supervision, regular visits to the gym can be a tall order.
- Gym caters to people with injuries
- Also focuses on specialized supervision
- Elderly, injured part of clientele
The Exercise Coach, a new gym in Round Rock, bills itself as a "smart" gym. It's open to everyone, but those recovering from injuries say it fits their goals and abilities.
“It’s perfect for me and my lifestyle. I’m busy, I don’t have a lot of time. Big box gyms really intimidate me and I end up feeling like I don’t know what to do when I go in there,” said Nancy Allison.
Allison suffered a fall last summer, leaving her unable to exercise regularly.
“I fell. I tripped over my dog and flew across the kitchen with my arms full of glasses and I couldn’t brace myself so when I hit [the floor] I fractured my hip,” she said.
Staff at The Exercise Coach build profiles for every gym member with specific information on strengths and weaknesses, and what they can and cannot do.
“We set up a range of motion that is safe for them based on their height, their age, their demographic.” -- The Exercise Coach owner Alejandro Alderete.
The information in each member profile is used to customize appropriate, yet challenging workouts for every member. Each machine in the gym has a screen with a PIN pad and once the PIN is entered, the machine will adjust weights and range of motion to fit that person's goals.
“With the smart technology it allows you to get a customized workout, instant feedback, and you get that proof of progress immediately while you’re working out here,” said Alderete.

Coaches say this type of technology tailors exercises for every individual with two 20 minute visits weekly. It is instant gratification for long term health.
“Since I feel that it’s making me stronger I can catch my grandkids a lot faster,” said Allison.
The Exercise Coach has roughly 70 studios in 24 states and 20 locations in Japan.
