AUSTIN, Texas -- Texas House lawmakers are set to launch an investigation into allegations that Speaker Dennis Bonnen offered media credentials to a conservative political group in exchange for targeting 10 Republican lawmakers in the 2020 primary.

The House General Investigating Committee has planned a hearing for next week.

The investigation comes at the request of Rep. Nicole Collier, D-Fort Worth, who serves as vice chair of the committee. Collier specifically asked for an investigation into “the allegations relating to media credentials, as well as the circumstance and events surrounding a June 12 meeting.”

Bonnen took a meeting with the head of Empower Texans, Michael Quinn Sullivan, back in June. Sullivan later revealed he had secretly recorded the meeting.

Bonnen has denied Sullivan’s account of the meeting.

On Monday, the Speaker emailed members an apology for saying "terrible things" but did not mention Sullivan's alleged quid pro quo offered by the speaker.

Republican Strategist Brendan Steinhauser told Capital Tonight he had listened to the recording and it confirmed what others who have listened to the tape have told media outlets.

“Speaker Bonnen did offer media credentials to Texas Scorecard, the outfit that Michael Sullivan has that reports from the Texas House,” Steinhauser said.

“In exchange, he asked for political expenditures or withholding political expenditures for a list of 10 candidates, 10 incumbent Republicans who Speaker Bonnen said needed to go. That was very clear on the tape. There was no ambiguity about it.”
