AUSTIN, Texas — A few years back, Spruce Dickerson came up with a plan to help the poor while perusing a rack of flip flops at a dollar store.
"In that moment it just went all over me. I thought, for $1 we can buy shoes, but my very next thought was that there are people all over this world that can't even afford one dollar,” she said.
Dickerson started Flip Flop to the World and has collected over 14,000 pairs of shoes for people in Nigeria, Mexico and Puerto Rico. This year, Dickerson is focusing on the United States, collecting flip flops for foster children.
“To those who lack love, who lack care, $1 is rich. That is everything to them. That pair of flip flops says ‘I love you,’” she said.
There are over a dozen collection barrels in Central Texas.
