AUSTIN, Texas — A North Austin man was stunned to see a car crash on his street after his Nest camera captured it on video.

  • Video shows car ramming into truck
  • Driver ran away
  • Police are investigating

Nick Hebert was enjoying the Fourth of July holiday with a friend, when he got an alarming message.

“‘Hey Nick it’s your neighbor Cassie, looks like some girl hit your car out there just want to let you know,’ said Hebert, describing the message.

Hebert immediately used an app on his phone to check the footage from his Nest home camera, and was shocked by what he saw. The video shows a car driving full speed down the street, then hits a parked truck.

“The video actually confirmed more that people didn’t know about. That this girl had actually sped down the street, crashed into my buddy’s truck that, it was a rental, then hopped out of the truck and ran down the neighborhood,” Hebert said.

Nick immediately went home to check out the scene.

“The two cars were here, still crashed, one was smoking,” said Hebert, “I saw about 10 neighbors out, just checking everything. We had two motorcycle cops here. I walked right over and told them ‘Hey I have video,’ and they were really gracious about that.”

We reached out to the Austin Police Department, and all they could confirm was that the crash happened on Cripple Creek Drive on the Fourth of July. The case is being treated as an auto theft.

Hebert said that he’s still shocked that it happened in his neighborhood, and said he’s glad he had the Nest to catch it on camera.

“It’s well worth it you know. Being down here at the end of the street, kind of a dead end, you know you never know what shenanigans go down at night,” Hebert said. “It really, really helps, and not just for me but for neighbors and things that may go on.”

When we reached out to the Austin Police Department Friday afternoon, they told us that a detective had not yet been assigned to the case.
