AUSTIN, Texas -- After reports of poor conditions, the government has decided to remove most of the children from a remote Border Patrol station near El Paso.
The Associated Press first reported last week that more than 300 kids were detained there and forced to care for each other with inadequate food, water and sanitation.
A Texas Congresswoman says 30 children were at the facility as of Monday. Her office was briefed on the situation by an official with Customs and Border Protection.
Attorneys who visited the station last week said older children were trying to take care of infants and toddlers.
“Immediately we noticed how dirty they were. Their clothes were dirty. Their faces were dirty. Many of the children were sick,” said Warren Binford, a law professor at Willamette University in Salem, Oregon and part of a group of experts that monitors children in government custody.
It's unclear where all the children have been moved. But Binford said some were sent to another facility in El Paso.
