AUSTIN, Texas -- MJ Hegar is trying to do what no Texas Democrat has done since 1998: win a U.S. Senate seat.
The former Air Force helicopter pilot rose to national fame in 2018 with her campaign ad "Doors," in which she challenged a policy about women in combat.
She came within three points of beating Round Rock's longtime incumbent Republican Congressman John Carter. Now, she has her sights set on Sen. John Cornyn, who’s trying to tie Hegar to Hollywood liberals and big-name Democrats. Cornyn has said Hegar is hand-picked by Sen. Chuck Schumer, D-New York.
“I think the only thing that I’ve been hand-picked for is by his team as the one candidate he really doesn’t want to face in the general [election],” Hegar said.
