AUSTIN, Texas -- The Asian American Resource Center hosted the annual Grand Chaand Raat Festival Sunday night.

  • Chaand Raat celebrated with festival
  • Participants shop at local vendors
  • Marked 5th annual festival

Chaand Raat is an event that falls on the eve of the Muslim holiday Eid ul Fitr, which celebrates the end of Ramadan.

Chaand Raat is a chance for the Muslim community to shop for clothes, jewelry, food, and henna before the Eid holiday.

This is the fifth annual Chaand Raat festival here in Austin.

People were able to shop at various local vendors. The event organizer spoke about why it’s so important to her to hold this event every year.

"You know, I want to help my community, I want to provide a platform where they can come and be as one community and enjoy,” said Jia Jabbar, the event organizer. “And it's a free festival, there's no fees to it there's no ticket to enter, and everyone is welcome. I do several festivals around the year, but this is my most favorite one."

She said this event is highly popular and gets more crowded every year.

They hope in the future to host it at a larger venue.
