AUSTIN, Texas -- The County Line Restaurant on 2222 is known primarily for its barbecue, and maybe its turtle population second.
- Thursday is World Turtle Day
- Group tracks turtles every year
- County Line Restaurant hosts Turtlemania Celebration
The restaurant’s location along Lake Austin has made it a hot spot for turtle research.
“Other sites, we send 20 divers into the water and set traps. We don’t have to do that here, the turtles know when dinner time is,” said Eric Munscher, a director for the Turtle Survival Alliance.
Munscher’s group has been doing research on turtles at this location for the past four years. This week they’ll be out gathering turtles from the lake and collecting data.

“We find healthy populations of turtles and see how they’re doing and how long they’re surviving in the environment they’re living in,” said Munscher.
Researchers spent Wednesday pulling hundreds of turtles out of the water, marking them and then returning them to the water. They will do the same Thursday as part of World Turtle Day.
Thursday evening things will be capped off by a Turtlemania celebration at County Line Restaurant.
