HUTTO, Texas – Similar to many communities surrounding Austin, Hutto is seeing rapid growth.
- Hutto ISD in need of improvements
- $194M bond put on ballot
- Measure approved with 60 percent in favor
The city has essentially doubled in population over the past decade.
To keep up with the expansion, Hutto ISD saw a need for major school additions and improvements. They put a $194 million bond package on the ballot in the recent elections and voters approved the measure with around 60 percent in favor of it.
“We’re focused on the whole student and whole community and I think people realized that. Even when you look at that number with all those zeros behind it, it’s like there’s got to be a purpose,” said Hutto ISD board president, Connie Gooding.
The biggest chunk of the bond, over $77,000,000 will go to building a third middle school and improving the other two. Hutto High School is slated to get more than $60,000,000 in upgrades that include classroom renovations and improvements to the athletic facilities. The elementary schools are not left out, they will receive close to $30,000,000.
There will also be a major investment in improving technology and security across the district. To go along with that, a couple of million dollars will be spent on improving transportation for students across Hutto ISD.
“That money is needed to make sure that we are not reactive to the needs of our community, we are more proactive with what we see coming.” said Gooding.
This is the largest school bond ever approved for the city of Hutto. Here’s a breakdown of the numbers:
