AUSTIN, Texas -- Just minutes into a meeting of the city's Planning Commission, dozens of activists marched from the lobby into the hall floor and loudly protested what they see as an unfair advance into their neighborhood Tuesday night.

  • Grievances surround the construction of what they see as a "domain"
  • Development proposal has been floating through City Hall for over a year
  • Urban village along east Riverside Drive and Pleasant Valley

Their grievances surround the construction of what they see as a "domain" in southeast Austin.

The original development proposal has been floating through city hall for over a year now.

Developers envision a so-called urban village along east Riverside Drive and Pleasant Valley that would include thousands of apartments, hotel rooms, and commercial real estate.

Activists said the construction will push out families who have lived in the area for generations.

Still, the development is crawling through various city departments, and many on the commission have questions about affordable housing as part of the plans.

After several warnings, protesters left on their own, but continued their demonstration in front of City Hall.

A memo from the city shows the proposal still has a traffic impact analysis that's under review.

Developers plan to be back at city hall next month.
