AUSTIN, Texas -- She was the wife of one president and the mother of another, but Barbara Bush definitely charted her own path.

  • Former first lady Barbara Bush dies in April 2018
  • New book details previously unknown aspects of her life

Now, we're learning never-before-known details about the former first lady in a new book, "The Matriarch: Barbara Bush and the Making of an American Dynasty."

It's by USA Today's Washington Bureau Chief Susan Page, who did extensive research and a series of in-person interviews with Mrs. Bush before she passed away last April.

Page detailed Bush’s struggle with depression, her dislike of President Donald Trump and the incredible love affair with her husband of 73 years.

“Barbara Bush was not afraid to die, but she worried about dying before he did and leaving him,” Page said. “And so in this final exchange she said to him, ‘I'm not going to worry about you, George.’ And he said to her, ‘I'm not going to worry about you, Bar. So he was basically giving her permission to die, and she was giving him permission to live.”

Page said then the two had a drink - the former president a vodka martini and Mrs. Bush a bourbon.
