BURNET, Texas – A man is dead after he was shot by a Burnet police officer, whom he allegedly hit with a car on Wednesday.

Around 1:30 a.m. Burnet police were called to a home on 300 S McNeil for a loud music disturbance. Upon arrival an officer noticed a vehicle parked in front of the house with its headlights on.
As the officer approached the vehicle, the driver started backing up. According to Burnet Chief of Police Paul Nelson, the officer gave the driver several verbal commands to stop before he was hit by the car in the left lower leg.
The officer then fired a shot into the vehicle, which hit and killed the driver. A female passenger in the car was interviewed and released.
The officer is a three-year veteran with the department and will be placed on paid administrative leave during the investigation. The Texas Rangers will be leading the investigation.
It has been 22 years since the last officer-involved shooting in Burnet.
