SAN ANTONIO - In the spirit of St. Patrick's Day weekend, the Alamo City Roller Girls were hoping luck was their side for the team's season opener.

  • Four-leaf clover hats and green shirts filled sports park
  • Played against Round Rock team
  • 43-year-old is oldest member of Alamo team

Among the crowd of fans at the Mission Concepcion Sports Park on Saturday were four-leaf clover hats and green shirts making for a sea of green, which is the team's color.

"I'm just hoping for wins all night," one team member said.

The team went up against the Rockin' City Roller Girls from Round Rock. Then, the Alamo City Roller Girl played against one another for a home team bout, featuring the Las Luchadoras and Bradley Bombshells.

"It is awesome," Diana Schmelzer, a team member, said.

On the track, Schmelzer is known as Skullyvera. At age 43, she is the oldest member on the team, which has been around for nearly 15 years.

'[People] think I'm crazy, but you know, I tell them it's also a stress reliever because you get to hit people without going to jail," Schmelzer said.

The rules of the sport no longer allow players to punch members of the other competing team. However, there are other ways players remain aggressive.

"I broke my tibia two years ago. I've had multiple shoulder separations," one team member said.

Despite the roughness of the sport, many members said they love what they do and can't wait for the season ahead.
