TRAVIS COUNTY — A man has died and another is in critical, but stable condition after a small single-engine plane crashed in the Lakeway area Thursday afternoon.

  • Plane crashed off airpark runway
  • 1 man had cardiac arrest, later died
  • The other is in critical but stable condition

Officials say the small single-engine Cessna 172 was attempting to land at the Lakeway Airpark when it crashed at the intersection of Lakeway Boulevard and The Hills Drive.

“The aircraft crossed over the tree line, attempted to land was unsuccessful, tried that twice, on the third attempt had come up this way. Something occurred and the plane came down,” Lakeway Police Chief Todd Radford said.

According to initial reports, two men in their 30s sustained life-threatening injuries. One man with cardiac arrest was taken to Baylor Scott & White Medical Center in Lakeway with CPR in progress. Police later confirmed he later died. Police identified him as Kevin Wayne Henderson from San Marcos.

The other patient, Randall Scott Nelson, was taken to Dell Seton Medical Center via a STAR Flight helicopter. He is in critical but stable condition.

Lieutenant Christopher Wood of the Lake Travis Fire Rescue was off-duty and coincidentally driving nearby when he saw the plane crash. He and another off-duty first responder tried extricating the two men out of the plane.

“Everyone in Lakeway acted pretty great, pretty honorable. The only reason I got involved, the plane’s gas line was broken and it was spraying in on them and they were unconscious and I made a decision to go and grab them,” Wood said.

Wood has been with the department for almost 20 years,

“This is my third one, first one off-duty, the other one on-duty," Wood said. "Three too many, they’re bad.”

The owner of the Cessna 172 single-engine plane that crashed has been identified as Corwin Bull. Spectrum News spoke with Bull about 4 p.m. Thursday in order to confirm he was not on the plane when it crashed.

The Austin Fire Department assisted Lake Travis firefighters.

Eastbound lanes in that section of Lakeway Boulevard remain partially closed to traffic as the plane must remain there overnight. Police anticipate both of the road's westbound lanes will be open soon at that intersection.

The Federal Aviation Administration and the National Transportation Safety Board are investigating.
