  • March 3 declared Draylen Mason Day in Austin

March 3 has been declared Draylen Mason Day by the City of Austin. On Sunday, Mason’s classmates will play at Austin High School to celebrate his life and pay tribute to his talent.

Mason was a part of the Austin Youth Orchestra for years, in which he played the bass. The orchestra is headlining Draylen Mason Day on Sunday.

Since his death, the orchestra created a scholarship fund in Mason’s honor to help low-income kids pursue a musical career.

Austin Youth Orchestra's founder says this weekend's repertoire is specifically selected to represent Mason’s talent and heritage.

“He had a gift. He knew he had a gift and he had plugged into the discipline. He was just an exemplary young man. And, even though the death was a tragedy, the concert is a tribute to that, the qualities of him that made everyone love him," said William Dick, the Austin Youth Orchestra founder.

The concert is at Austin High School Sunday starting at 3 p.m. Admission is free.
