AUSTIN, Texas — The cost of going to college continues to rise, as does student debt.
- Group holds rally at Texas State Capitol
- Concerned with rising student debt
Texas college graduates are paying more than ever, which sparked a rally at the Texas State Capitol Friday.
It was all part of Jolt's Power Up Summit. The group is focused on breaking down economic barriers that limit access to higher education. The protesters say legislators aren't doing enough to make education affordable for people in Texas. They’re demanding legislators continue to protect the Texas Dream Act.
"Dallas is one of the only cities in the state that actually allow all people in the city to go to community college for free,” Cristina Tzintzun, executive director of Jolt, said. “We want to see that become a statewide law. We also want to make sure that college is more affordable so more money to higher education so that every student that wants to go can afford to go."
Only California has more people saddled with student debt than Texas.
