AUSTIN, Texas -- February is Black History Month and in Texas, one woman gets her own special week.

  • First African-American woman to serve in Texas Senate
  • First African-American woman elected to Congress from the South
  • First African-American woman to deliver keynote address at DNC

Barbara Jordan's life and legacy is on display at the State Capitol this week. The interactive exhibit highlights the three term Congresswoman from Texas who was a first in so many areas. She was the first African-American woman to serve in the Texas Senate, the first African American woman elected to Congress from the South and the first African American woman to deliver a keynote address at the Democratic National Convention.

“She was able to get folks who normally don’t talk to each other to engage in a dialogue. She was able to get people to put their divisions aside and listen to each other,” said Norma Cantú, a member of the Barbara Jordan Freedom Foundation Board of Trustees and a professor in law and education at the University of Texas.

The Jordan exhibit is in the Texas Capitol Rotunda and runs through Saturday.
