SAN ANTONIO - The UTSA Dreamers Resource Center is marking one year of assisting undocumented students on the university's main campus.

Educates about needs of undocumented students

The center was established in 2018 as part of the UTSA Presidential Initiative on Diversity and Inclusion. It opened to educate students and community members about the needs of undocumented students and provide services.

Its staff engages in educational advising, access to legal services, community outreach and incoming student help.

"It's just a safe space for them to come where they are not having to disclose to multiple offices their immigration status," said Courtney Balderas-Jacob, assistant director.

Within the first year, approximately 50 students were helped in its advising office. However, Balderas-Jacob said another several hundred were helped outside the office.

"We also do a lot of outreach to incoming students so making sure the community and the state know that students in Texas have access to high education regardless of their immigration status."

As for what's next, the center is looking for more ways to receive funding opportunities, scholarships and grants for dreamers.
