AUSTIN, Texas - Early predictions on who's going to run for president on the Democratic ticket in 2020 are rolling in, and rising to the top of that list is Texas's Beto O'Rourke.

  • Beto O'Rourke among perceived front runners for Democratic nominee for president in 2020
  • Many supporters repurposing "Beto for Senate" yard signs
  • Analysts say it's too early to speculate about run for president

His narrow loss in the Senate race against Ted Cruz gained him national name recognition and fame. In yards across Travis County, "Beto for Senate" signs are still blowing in the wind.

"Lot of grassroots demand. People want to see Beto stick around and run again. He's definitely a solid candidate," said Brian Stoller with the Travis County Democratic Party.

Since O'Rourke's defeat in November, there have been whispers of a run for the presidency in 2020. With that in mind, supporters are now updating their yard signs.

"So we came up with a sticker so you can just slide it right on over, you know?" said Stoller.

"I think Beto O'Rourke for president in 2020 is a very curious phenomenon. It's driven by his effective fundraising. By some degree, his personality and the way that fits our political times, as somebody who ran on authenticity," said Jim Henson with the Texas Politics Project.

Henson says there's a long list of potential presidential nominees and O'Rourke rising to the top of that list isn't necessarily a good sign for his camp.

"Very often, the front runner this early on doesn't make it all the way. You can ask not-President Jeb Bush, for example," said Henson.

Henson feels it's more likely that O'Rourke takes another stab at a seat in the Senate. His name recognition is strong, but his political experience is on the state level.

The bottom line: signage strongholds or not, it's far too early for O'Rourke supporters to bank on a 2020 run.

"Polling gives you a little bit of a very tentative heat check. It's not predictive of anything at this point," said Henson.
