AUSTIN, Texas - Saturday Night Live cast member Pete Davidson apologized this past weekend for an insensitive joke made the weekend prior about newly elected Texas Rep. Dan Crenshaw.

  • SNL apology enjoyed by Democrats and Republicans alike
  • Very little political divide in Austin's live comedy scene
  • Local comic Ted Meredith believes comedy has the power to unite

Crenshaw this past Saturday appeared on the show alongside Davidson and got some jabs in himself.

People on both sides of the aisle loved it, which has people thinking comedy might be key to finding middle ground.

“I thought it was remarkable. It was very rare to see a comedian or a politician apologize or forgive or accept forgiveness in that sense,” said Austin comedian Ted Meredith.

In fact, at the famed Esther’s Follies on Austin’s 6th Street, everyone, regardless of political stripe, is fair game.

“I can just take a look at our audience on any given night and see that sort of mix happening, see them all laugh at the same joke,” Meredith said. “Maybe this is a point where we all take a breath and decide to take ourselves a little less seriously.”

Meredith believes comedy has the power to heal wounds and maybe reconcile some of our differences.

“It is starting to become more of something that brings us together – that we can laugh at our foibles,” he said.
