AUSTIN, Texas – With voter turnouts breaking records across the state and the country, election officials work to create a safe place for voters.
“Polling places are a safe haven. So you stop campaigning 100 feet from the door of the polling place,” Dana Debeauvoir, Travis County Clerk, said.
In Texas, that's called electioneering. It’s when people use or distribute material for or against certain candidates, measures or parties and it’s illegal within that 100 foot boundary.
“The fastest way to get it to stop is to tell the election judge inside the polling place that you’ve got someone who is in violation of the 100 foot distance marker. The judge will go out and tell them to move back,” Debeauvoir said.
Election observers agree that higher voter turnouts can create more parity in the political system.
