AUSTIN, Texas -- As the midterm elections inch closer, we're continuing to give you a chance to get to know the candidates on the ballot.
One of the statewide races Texans will be voting on is for Land Commissioner.
The Commissioner heads the General Land Office which manages state lands and the Texas coast, operates the Alamo, helps fund public education through the Permanent School Fund, provides benefits to veterans and helps Texans recovering from natural disasters.
The current person heading the GLO is George P. Bush.
But Democrat Miguel Suazo, an energy and natural resources attorney, is vying to unseat the Republican incumbent.
“I’m running as the most qualified candidate on the ballot this year,” Suazo said. “I’m running to do the job George P. Bush was elected to do and to do the job that he’s failed to do.”
