SAN ANTONIO – What happens when you mix silver, black and Argentinian flair? You get Spurs number 20.
"Now therefore I Ron Nirenberg Mayor of the City of San Antonio, in recognition thereof, do hereby proclaim August 30th, 2018 to be Manu Ginobili Day," said San Antonio Mayor Ron Nirenberg.
"I'm still sad. I wanted him to play another year," said fan Eric Valesquez.
It's a bittersweet feeling -- years of memories mixed with a side order of grandpa juice. San Antonio is is wishing Manu the best as he heads into retirement.
"Over Ginobili's 16 seasons with the Spurs, his career has been filled achievements including four NBA championships, two all-star game selections, two NBA picks, and a Sixth Man of the Year Award," Nirenberg said.
The hashtag #ManuGinobiliDay was trending like crazy Thursday and spreading like wildfire across social media. Hundreds of fan videos have surfaced over the past few days.
As a player he was relatable and always brought a sense of good sportsmanship and good spirits to the court and community.
"He can do it in all kinds of languages on the court. It is the Eurostep, it is a clutch three. He'll make us pull our hair out when he does something that is just unbelievable until it works, and so I think it's that kind of zest that Manu brought to the game that people in San Antonio just love," said Councilman Rey Saldana.
"I think it's just the connection he has with the people. He's always been really nice when I met him his first year here he was speaking to us in Spanish. He's just a great guy," Velasquez said.
"He's a model of the San Antonio way, working together for a common cause, embracing a diversity of talent and experience, and winning with grace," Nirenberg said.
