AUSTIN, Texas – Traffic might get a little worse in South Austin over the weekend while crews work to tear down the William Cannon bridge.

The main lanes of Interstate 35 will be shut down starting Friday night at 10 p.m. and reopening at 9 a.m. on Saturday.

Schedule of construction:

  • Friday: 10 p.m. to 9 a.m. on Saturday
  • Saturday: 11 p.m. to 10 a.m. on Sunday

Both of the northbound and southbound lanes of I-35 will be closed at the William Cannon exit. The bridge will be demolished on Saturday.

Traffic will be detoured on the frontage roads. Drivers are asked to seek alternate routes if they can.

The construction is part of TxDOT's Mobility 35 Project, which aims to ease traffic congestion on I-35. The price tag of the changes is $79 million.

Changes include:

  • Widening main lanes and shoulders
  • Extended entrance and exit lanes
  • U-turn bridges on William Cannon Drive and Stassney Lane.
