NEW BRAUNFELS, Texas -- New Braunfels Public Works has compiled a list of streets that need attention to present to council in September.

Last month, the department held a community meeting and provided a city-wide survey for residents to pitch the roads they felt need the most repair. That list stretches 13 pages and is divided by council district.

"We received a lot of recommendations for streets, and what we'll be doing is going out and looking at them and analyzing from the streets we think should be on the list and making a determination for the allocated funds that we have for this maintenance program," director Greg Malatek said.

Last year, the Street Improvement Program was allocated nearly $1.8 million to use toward fixing up the roads. Malatek hopes to see the number rise this fiscal year.

"We're seeing an increase in streets so we're anticipating probably an increase in this budget because we're going to have more streets that we have to maintain."

With a limited budget, the department will only be able to address the most traveled roads that they feel need the most maintenance. A second street crew was added last year to aid with the work.

"There's a lot of needs for the city and that's a tough thing for the city manager and council to decide to try and meet everybody's needs. But I will say, streets and drainage are usually the number one priorities for residents for issues they have around town," Malatek said.
