LIVINGSTON, Mont. — Margaret Ruth "Margot" Kidder, who rose to fame for her portrayal of Lois Lane opposite Christopher Reeve in the "Superman" film series, died Sunday, according to a Montana funeral home.

She was 69 and her cause of death is unknown at this point.

Kidder continued acting right up until this year, taking small roles in TV shows and movies as well as stage roles.

The actress had a very public battle with bipolar disorder for years. During her struggle she was briefly homeless in 1996. Kidder became an advocate for mental health after that incident.

She is survived by a daughter.
