AUSTIN, Texas — Gov. Greg Abbott's making major changes to his staff, including a new chief of staff.

The shake-up comes two years into his first term.

During a press conference at the Capitol Monday, Abbott was surrounded by his new hires.

They include Texas native and longtime lobbyist Luis Saenz, who will replace Chief of Staff Daniel Hodge.

A press release from the governor's office tells us a little more about Saenz: Saenz is currently the Principal and Founder of Saenz Public Affairs and has been actively involved in conservative politics at all levels of government for over 25 years.

Saenz began his professional career at The Heritage Foundation in Washington, D.C. He previously served as Appointments Director for Gov. Abbott and has also served in senior staff positions for Texas Gov. Rick Perry, was Chief of Staff to former Texas Comptroller Carole Keeton Strayhorn and has worked as an aide to former U.S. Senators Phil Gramm and Kay Bailey Hutchison, and former Congressman Henry Bonilla.

Saenz is a native of Carrizo Springs, Texas, and he is a graduate of St. Mary’s University in San Antonio.

Another is former state lawmaker Tommy Williams, who will advise the governor on budget issues.

Abbott says the transition will not change the current focus -- which remains on Hurricane Harvey rebuilding efforts.

"After we get through with responding to the hurricane which will take a long time, but as we head into the next session we're going to be digging into some very big very deep issues that you will hear more about in the future,” he said.

The staff changes are scheduled to take effect on Oct.1.
