GLOVERSVILLE, N.Y. -- A Gloversville father is facing charges after being accused of punching his baby in the head.
Police say the infant is just 1 week old and is in stable condition at Albany Medical Center.
The infant's father is now behind bars, and it's not expected he will make his $50,000 cash bail.
Andrew Allen, 31, was arrested and arraigned on Saturday. He's facing charges of first-degree assault, reckless endangerment and second degree attempted assault.
According to Gloversville Police Captain Michael Scott, child protection services visited the Cherry Street home on Friday. He says that visit is what caused an argument Saturday morning, resulting in the alleged assault.
Only the mother and infant were home at the time, and the child is believed to be the only one injured. They say he was struck in the head.
“What Mr. Allen had told us [is] that he was attempting to strike the mother and she had the child in her arms, and he had struck the child,” said Scott.
Scott says Allen and his girlfriend are both known to police. He adds that it is possible more charges will be filed, but would not say what those would be, or who would be facing them.
Scott also says this department has several young parents, and a call like Saturday's is one that leaves on impact on officers. He says no stone will be left unturned when it comes to bringing justice for the child.
