After years of playing on uneven grass, young athletes in Whitestone scored newly renovated soccer fields.

Parks officials, local lawmakers and kids cut the ribbon on the newly restored soccer fields at Little Bay Park Tuesday.

The slopes of the fields are now designed to prevent flooding during wet weather. There are also new benches, trees and a walking path.

"We couldn't even run a straight line so it had to be all redone," said Luigi Cirigliano from St. Luke's Athletic Association.

"For soccer, which is a growing sport, kids want to get out here and have some fun. We now have a brand new turf field," said NYC Parks Commissioner Mitchell Silver.

The makeover cost $1.6 million.
