Fire crews near Kirby were called out to a grass fire on Saturday by instead arrived to quick spreading flames shooting from a home.

The fire broke out around 1:30 p.m. on the Northeast Side near Wagner High School.

Though no one was hurt, back up was called out to the scene due to high temperatures posing a challenge for firefighters.

“It is a challenge with the heat index, but these guys out here, they train and prepare for this stuff. They also do a lot of cardio exercise and a lot of running and walking outside to get prepared for something like this,” said Timothy Cavanagh of the Kirby Fire Department.

A second home also caught fire, but only a bedroom was damaged.

The Red Cross was called to assist with displaced families.

The cause of the fire remains under investigation.
