AUSTIN, Texas -- It's a new day at Dell Seton Medical Center at the University of Texas. Austin's newest hospital is ready to open its doors with a fresh perspective and new space.

The new health care facility held an open house on Saturday to offer an early look at the new state-of-the-art features.

The Level 1 trauma center offers 42 trauma beds, 13 operating rooms, and 211 patient rooms.

The hospital also sits across the street from UT-Austin's previous medical school, University Medical Center Brackenridge.

"We needed a modern teaching hospital. Because Brackenridge, UMC Brackenridge, wasn't built to have, for example, some of the things you'll see here, which is classrooms throughout the hospital," said State Sen. Kirk Watson, D-Austin.

Eleven counties in the region will be served in the new space, but its reach has global potential.

"They have, in the lights that the doctor or the surgeon will put over where they're doing the surgery, cameras embedded. So that you can be across the street at Dell Medical School or you can be around the world and be able to see what's going on," said Watson.

But mark your calendars because the work isn't done yet.

"On Sunday of next week -- the 21st -- we begin to move the patients from UMC Brackenridge into this facility and we'll be open for business at 6 a.m.," said Seton Family Healthcare CEO Jesus Garza.

It's a countdown for a modern take on medicine.

"The whole motto of what we're doing is to rethink everything about healthcare. How do we become a model healthy community? And I believe that this day is the next step in creating a model healthy community," said Watson.
