TROY, N.Y. -- Representatives from the Bonacio Company and Bow Tie Cinemas provided more details Wednesday night on the proposed movie theater for downtown Troy.
During the hour-long presentation at the planning and economic development committee meeting, developers said the theater will bring, on average, 10,000 visitors each week to the downtown area.
“We’ve been successful in both downtown Schenectady and Saratoga Springs and numerous other downtowns in the six states we operate in, and the time is right,” said Bow Tie Cinemas Chief Operating Officer Joe Masher.
The theater is slated to be built at One Monument Square, on the 1.6-acre property. It'll have nine screens, with a 10th at the nearby historic American Theater. This would be the fourth Bow Tie Cinemas theater to be built in the Capital Region, but the only one with luxury amenities.
“We’re going to have electric recliner seating, as well as full food and bar options,” Masher said.
Masher says the theater will provide at least 50 jobs, with five full-time positions. And to help address the parking and traffic concerns for the downtown area, developers would also create one level of parking with 112 spots.
"Being busy in your downtown is actually a good thing and we have to design parking carefully and we have to make sure we have everything taken care of," said Bonacio Construction Inc. Director of Business Development Larry Novik.
Developers are hoping to have all the city approvals completed by summer. They're aiming for construction to begin this fall.
“The track records of both the Bonacio Company and the Bow Tie Cinema Company just gives me a lot of confidence that they’re going to be able to do what they want to do,” said city councilman Dean Bodnar.
Developers say construction will take about a year, so they're hoping to have everything completed and open by fall 2018.
