LONDON — Today, Queen Elizabeth II celebrates her sapphire jubilee.

It was on this day 65 years ago, the queen's father King George VI died and Elizabeth became queen.

Buckingham Palace says there won't be a lot of fanfare today, unlike the Queen's Golden Jubilee a few years ago.

The queen’s life has garnered plenty of attention lately with Netflix’s hit series “The Crown,” depicting the trials and tribulations of her majesty's rise and acquisition of the crown.

Claire Foy, who plays Queen Elizabeth in the acclaimed series, recently won the Golden Globe for Best Performance by an Actress in a Drama Television Series as well as the Screen Actors’ Guild award for Outstanding Performance by a Female Actor in a Drama Series.

John Lithgow, who plays the incomparable Winston Churchill, has also received a lot of praise.
