PFLUGERVILLE - A grandson of Mexican immigrants will be taking the oath of office as Pflugerville’s next mayor.

“I think this moment would have really made them proud, so I’m very proud to have been elected as mayor and more importantly as a Hispanic mayor in this part of the country,” said Mayor Victor Gonzales.

Stephanie Rios has lived in Pflugerville her entire life she said the new mayor reflects a growing town.

“Pflugerville has been pretty diversified over the last ten years so I think this is kind of where this is leading to. Having diverse public figures in these towns,” said Rios.

But she didn’t cast her vote based on race.

“I voted for him because he ran a campaign that would include Pflugerville in the A.C.C district and that was really important to me because when I was a student in Pflugerville I had to pay a lot of money just to take classes at A.C.C,” said Rios.

A measure to annex Pflugerville as an Austin Community College district has been floated in the past but it has yet to materialize.

Doing so would mean a collaborative effort between the city, Pflugerville I.S.D and A.C.C and an additional property tax for Pflugerville residents.

"Depending on the value of the house it can be anywhere from $30-80 a year, maybe a little higher in some cases but again is that worth the investment in our community and our young people? I think it is," said Gonzales.

An investment that could signal the changing tide of a growing community.
