LOCKHART, Texas - Two lawmen will face off this November for the title of Caldwell County Sheriff.
Ray Chandler, a Republican, is trying to unseat the incumbent sheriff, Democrat Daniel Law.
"I believe that with the two candidates who are here, myself and my opponent, he's a great guy, I don't have nothing against him, but he does not have the experience needed to run a sheriff's office," said Law, the incumbent candidate.
Law has been sheriff for three terms, but Chandler contends his 30 years in law enforcement makes him better suited for the job. Chandler currently works for the Precinct 1 Constable.
"Throughout my career I have been in a small agency, a county agency and then the big city of Austin," said Chandler.
One issue both agree on is that the Caldwell County Sheriff's Office is underfunded and understaffed.
"I have some innovative ideas on how to bring revenue into the county for the department," said Chandler.
Chandler says he'd apply for more grants, write more tickets and put a greater emphasis on narcotics enforcement - all initiatives that could bring in more money.
"We are getting the job done on the backs, sweat and tears of these men and women who work for Caldwell County,” said Law. “And they are doing an excellent job with the resources we have."
Law says he's already applied for grants and says the county commissioners are to blame for the lack of funding.
Come November, Caldwell County voters will decide which man they want as sheriff.
