AUSTIN, Texas—Austin officials are studying DNA samples of Barton Springs salamanders after finding out the endangered species isn't just found in Barton Springs.
City leaders are partnering with the University of Texas to provide DNA testing. Officials hope to understand how large the population is and whether they're traveling through the aquifer to reach other springs.
Researchers recently found salamanders in southern Travis and northern Hays counties.
Officials expect to test at least 150 salamanders.
