BINGHAMTON, N.Y. -- It started off as a typical day for neighbors on Mozart Street in Binghamton.
However, they soon would hear at least two large bangs, which they would later find out to be gunshots.
"It was mostly just panic and fear that I wasn't sure what was going to happen next," said Chase Healey, a nearby neighbor. "I really didn't know what. I've never been through anything like that. I was more worried about the kids and making sure they were OK."
Police say two men knocked on door of 1 Mozart Street when some type of confrontation happened, leading the suspect to shoot them both. One man died and the other is being treated for a severe gunshot wound to his arm. Binghamton Police Chief Joseph Zikuski believes all three of these men knew each other.
"This is not a random attack," Zikuski said. "This was not a home invasion. We're being told right off the bat by one of the individuals that they all knew each other. So this isn't a random act showing up here or anything like that but we do not know what's behind it at this point."
One of the victims was able to take down the suspect, choking him unconscious. The suspect was later taken into custody. Zikuski says this is the last neighborhood he would expect this from.
"I've been around a long time," Zikuski said. "When the mayor showed up, he said it's an unusual area. This is a nice neighborhood. Very quiet. Next to nothing as far as problems."
And many neighbors we spoke with said they chose this neighborhood because it was a safe area for their children to grow up.
"Things don't happen like that around here. It's a quiet neighborhood. We rarely will have an argument around here once in a while let alone something as terrifying as that," said Healey.
Both the suspect and the victim was taken to a nearby hospital for significant injuries but the suspect wasn't shot.
Police have yet to release the names of the victims and the suspect.
