This weekend, you can see different varieties of a colorful fish at the Koi and Bonsai Show at Snug Harbor. NY1's Krizia Ruiz filed the following report.

Many have never heard of it, but the koi fish is known for its beautiful colors. For the first time, they are being featured at a show at Snug Harbor.

"They're very interesting, and a colorful fish to look at," said one attendee.

The event was organized by members of the Tri State ZNA Koi Club, and organizers say the goal is to educate people about the fish and to give collectors a chance to compete.

"We just want everyone to come here and see what this hobby is all about," said Judi Caputo, the Tri State ZNA Koi Club vice president.

People from all over the country are on-hand, participating in the competition. Judges are looking at body shape, color, skin texture, and size.

Judges say koi fish are some of the most distinct creatures in the world; there are more than 200 different varieties.

"That's why we call them is beautiful jewels, living jewels," said Terry Alexander of the Tri State ZNA Koi Club.

People attending the show say this is more than a competition; they say collecting the fish and tress has a calming effect.

"They are just very relaxing. They follow me like they're little puppies. They go over, they come up. When I go to the right, they go to the right, to the left, and it's just an enjoyable hobby," Elm Park resident Sheryl Moller said.

Organizers say the event is a way for experienced collectors like Moller to share their knowledge with those thinking about getting a koi of their own.

"It's really to reach out and share this hobby with people that don't know anything about it," said Caputo.

The free event runs through Sunday. The winner is expected to be announced Saturday night.
