People around the country will raise their margaritas Thursday in celebration of Cinco de Mayo.

The holiday is actually more popular in the U.S. than in Mexico.

The day commemorates Mexico's victory against the French during the Battle of Puebla in 1862.

A University of California, Los Angeles professor says California Latinos created the holiday during the Civil War.

Many confuse it with Mexican Independence Day, which is in September.

Cinco de Mayo has become associated with drinking in the U.S., earning nicknames like, "Cinco de Drinko."
