LANCASTER, Calif. -- Sales of beer, wine and other alcoholic beverages that come in single-serve cans or bottles will no longer be available in the City of Lancaster.

Council members voted in a 4 to 0 vote Tuesday night to pass an ordinance updating the City's Muncipal Code, citing the purchase of liquor for off-site consumption contributes to public nuisance.

Vice Mayor Marvin Crist hopes the ordinance will deter individuals from doing things like loitering, littering and panhandling.

"They're consumed either in a car or on the street and that causes the City major problems. So it creates panhandling, it creates individuals that go out and they panhandle outside these stores, they panhandle outside in our different community areas, until they can raise enough money to purchase another single," said Crist.

Under the new ordinance, individuals have to buy alcohol in a six-pack, with each container at least 12 ounces in size.

Malt beverages have to be purchased in quantities of six as well unless it's already pre-packaged in a four pack.

Individuals may also no longer buy a single wine cooler, but buying them in a multi-pack is OK.
