AUSTIN, Texas -- A unique exotic reptile pet show came to Austin this weekend. The HERPS event hosted several different types of reptile vendors.

Those who came out were able to purchase reptiles and products for the unique animals.

However, Shawn Gray, Owner of the Reptile Exotic Pet Show, says educating people is more meaningful than anything. He explained how the show partners with the Natural Science Museum in Houston to help disabled kids.

"We bring in animals after our show on Saturday night, and we set up and let autistic or kids with sensory disabilities handle these animals and it's like a light switch goes off, so that to me is the most important", said Gray.

There were also opportunities to pet and learn about exotic animals. Gray  said they are not as harmful as most people believe and are perfect for kids to have as pets.

"That's the goal. Of course the vendors want to sell their animals, but to see a kid's face light up when they first hold a tarantella or a tortoise," Gray added.

This was the show's second year and has expanded to five cities.

The show hopes to continue to come to Austin and become more involved with colleges and other educational programs.
