Law enforcement officials say they've busted a violent Brooklyn gang responsible for more than 30 shootings. It's part of the police commissioner's strategy of zeroing in on the relatively small number of offenders responsible for a large share of the city's crime, as NY1's Michael Herzenberg reports.
Children were playing in this Coney Island Avenue courtyard in July when a man with a gun shouted: "I’m Fresh, Corey is my name, from Ditmas, Newkirk" and opened fire. The kids scattered but a 50-year-old man was shot.
"He shoots these innocent bystanders for no reason and he shoots at this woman for no reason," said Brooklyn District Attorney Ken Thompson. "Then he shoots at this woman, and he gets on his bicycle and rides away."
Police say the shooter, Corey Roberts, was targeting a rival gang member.
Roberts is one of 18 alleged members of a violent gang based in Flatbush called 'Folk Nation: No Love City' indicted on charges from weapons possession to murder.
Members allegedly were involved in more than 30 shootings over two years — including the killing of a 25-year-old rival in Ditmas Park.
The Police commissioner calls them "stupid, violent, vicious, thugs."
"No concern at all for human life so why should we be concerned with them in the sense of putting them away for 25 years so we can get them off the street," Bratton said.
Prosecutors identified Kwyme Waddell as the leader of the gang, which allegedly was fighting with the Crips in Canarsie.
Police say members used social media to boast about their activities. "I want to boom it up,” one wrote on Facebook. “We gotta make sure somebody gets touched tonight.”
Detectives say the crime spree took a Hollywood turn during the filming of a rap video at Gleason's Gym in DUMBO for the movie 'Creed'.
Photos of the shoot were posted on Instagram, and members of No Love City believed they saw rivals responsible for killing a No Love City member known as 'Money Bags'.
The District Attorney says Javanni Moise, Jean Fremont and Jarmel Blake were among gang members who jumped in cars to go "hunting".
"When they came outside an all-out gun battle erupted right on the streets of DUMBO where these gangs were shooting at each other," District Attorney Thompson said.
Sixteen of the defendants are being held at Rikers. Police say they are confident the others will be caught soon.
